My older children said they wanted to move to the United States. The youngest, Angela, was not so eager, as she had formed a close relationship with my mother. This would be a tremendous change of life for all of us.
My husband would practically have to start his life all over again. His English, of the many languages he spoke, was not perfect; but his skill with people, his charm and personality, surpassed all the disadvantages. Principally he was a man who loved adventure, and this trip surely would offer that.
My English was quite good, as this was the language I was taught in China at the convent, so I was ready to meet any type of work in order to help bring in an income. The children, on their part, promised to meet all the challenges in school and work. I had a meeting with them and said that if we would maintain that strong desire for a year, and if it be the will of Divine Destiny that we should go to the United States, then all the obstacles would be overcome.
As the end of that year approached, we were challenged on all sides. The lease for the tenants in my mother-in-lawâs house was ending, but they were still undecided about leaving her house. My eldest daughter Lourdes was completing her last year in high school. My husband had a whole new region in the south of Brazil offered to him at his job, which would greatly enhance his income. Just before leaving for one of his business trips to the south of Brazil, my husband went to the American Consulate to make sure that our names were present on the list of the last of the immigrants that would be permitted to enter the United States, as a law was about to be passed greatly limiting the possibilities of immigration.
We had befriended two brothers who were in Brazil doing their missionary work for the Mormon Church, as we had rented one of our apartments in the back of our house to them. Their mother, upon learning of our desire to move to the United States, declared officially that she would sponsor our family in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she lived. The law in the U.S. required an American citizen to take this responsibility for two years.
Nothing was secure, yet everything was moving forward full-steam and we were totally reliant on Divine Destiny. I took the first move to discuss the full implications of our moving to the United States with my husband. If we were to move to the States, we would have to sell our house. Taking into account the difficulties of my mother-in-law with her tenants and our need to sell our house, we devised a plan where everyoneâs needs could be met. We proposed that these tenants, who were operating a small factory in their home, buy our house and vacate my mother-in-lawâs house.
